Rifle sits on the banks of the Colorado River surrounded by mountains. The view from the top of Anvil Points, on the Roan Plateau, is one the most stunning in Colorado – not to mention one where you can drive right up to it yet still have it all to yourself. Looking down a 4,000-foot cliff to the Colorado River below, with rolling forests and grasslands behind you, is the perfect place to explore for a day or watch the sunrise or sunset.

If its sandstone arches you’re looking for, the Rifle Arch is a hidden gem just north of town. The moderate trail crosses desert scrub, climbs to a shelf overlooking the Roan Plateau and Battlement Mesa and finally scrambles up the hillside to the stunning arch. Once you reach the arch, make sure to continue the climb to the peaceful amphitheater behind for amazing views of the desert floor and the mesa’s beyond..
